The Playhouses

The Playhouses - originally built for grandchildren Ruth, Tom and Charlotte - showcase Angela and Alban’s remarkable attention to detail and Alban’s many skills gathered over a lifetime of working as a master craftsman. The creativity on display makes Spindle Cottage one of the most unique holiday cottages in Somerset.

“After I finished the main house I built a gazebo and potting shed for the garden, and then the little cottage for Ruth when she was born. When Tom came along we couldn’t leave him out so I made him the Elizabethan Lodge. And then it seemed obvious that Charlotte would need one too, so I built her a shop and post office.” (Alban, 2019)

Charlotte’s Post Office

Surrounded by neatly built railings and a beautiful ‘Owl and the Pussycat’ themed garden sits the shop and post office, complete with counter and bow-fronted window. In the matching bike shed sits an old post mistress’s bicycle donated by Wookey Hole post office. The shop is fully stocked with wartime tins, wooden fruit and knitted ice-creams. The building is constructed with small Indian bricks and sandstone blocks replicating designs from the 19th century.

Tom’s Elizabethan Lodge

Alban has an eye for historical accuracy and used old railway sleepers and traditional lathe and plasterwork with a lime wash to craft the lodge. The colour pigment comes from natural Ochre made from ground up stone. Inside, the table and staircase - leading to a small bedroom - were fashioned from a piece of burr elm Alban found in the Mendip Hills. Downstairs, electric lights flicker like candles creating a cosy atmosphere.

Ruth’s Cottage

The inspiration for the cottage came from an old stone window that Alban acquired some years ago. Having set it into a wall, he felt it needed a building around it. Local Doulting stone was used for the whole cottage aside from the Gothic arch over the door, which is Redwood stone from the Mendip Hills.

The highlight is surely the custom-made, cast iron spiral staircase leading to a small bedroom above.

“This is a wonderful place to stay. The owners have created somewhere very special for their grandchildren and are now offering the experience up to everyone.”

“It’s clear that a lot of time and love has been spent by Alban, a truly gifted man. There is always something else to discover. The little houses in the garden are adorable, the children loved them.”

“It is truly a magical place to stay, we all had a great time and the kids were in heaven in the play houses, thank you.”
